Zanzibar Game Rules

Zanzibar is a game played with three dice and either counters or chips – suitable for any number of players.

To start the game, each player will need to be given 20 chips, or if there are only two players – 15 chips.

The first player has up to three rolls of the dice to get the highest score possible, they can stop on the first or second roll – if they are satisfied with the score. The remaining players will then try to roll a higher score using no more rolls used by the first player.

Scoring System:

Three of a Kind – Match dice with three of the same value, for example – 1, 1, 1 or 6, 6, 6.

1, 2, 3 – Rolling the dice to reveal the numbers 1, 2, 3.

4, 5, 6 – Rolling this is considered “Zanzibar” which is the highest scoring combination.

All other combinations of dice rank as a point total of the three dice added, as below:

  • 1 = 100 points
  • 6 = 60 points
  • 2 = 2 points
  • 3 = 3 points
  • 4 = 4 points
  • 5 = 5 points

  • If for example, you were to roll the following combinations, you would score the following scores:

  • 1, 1, 1 = 300 points
  • 2, 4, 5 = 11 points
  • 4, 4, 6 = 68 points
  • 1, 5, 6 = 165 points

  • The player with the lowest score at the end of the round, receives a number of chips from each of the other players. The number of chips depends on the winning hand:

  • 1 Chip – If the highest throw is just a points total
  • 2 Chips – If the highest throw is 1, 2, 3
  • 3 Chips – If the highest throw is Three of a Kind
  • 4 Chips – If the highest throw is 4, 5, 6 (Zazibar)

  • The winner of the game, is the player who manages to get rid of all their chips.
