American Roulette is one of the most popular versions of the classic casino game and unlike many of the countries variations, itís a commonly played version played around the world. Roulette originally started in France, in the 17th century by the mathematician Blaise Pascal and was believed to have been introduced to the US by a Frenchman visiting in the 19th century.
The US wheel features 38 slots, each numbered individually with numbers from 1 to 36 as well as two Zero slots, numbered 0 and 00. The two Zero slots are on opposite sides of the wheel and consecutive numbers such as 9, 10 and 31, 32 also face each other. The two Zero slots are coloured green and the all the other numbers alternate from red to black.
The basic idea of Roulette is that players can make a very unique and often complex combination of bets, to predict the outcome of each spin. When first joining the table, you will exchange your money for roulette chips. Each player at the table will have their own colour of chips, allowing for the croupier to easily see who made the winning bets. Whilst using the chips, you will notice that the betting area is divided into two distinct sections, inside and outside bets.
Inside Betting refers to the bets you place on individual numbers, whether that be a single number or a combination of adjacent numbers. The most popular Inside Bets are the following:
A Straight or Single is a bet placed on just one number, where you are paid at odds of 35 to 1 if you hit.
A Split is a bet that covers two numbers which you will place across the intersection line. The numbers have to be adjoining and you can split either horizontally or vertically, examples being 12/13 and 26/27. This bet pays at 17 to 1.
This bet is placed on one row of three numbers, you place the chip on the edge of the line of a number at the end of the row. This bet pays at odds of 11 to 1.
This is a bet on four numbers in a square layout on the betting area. You place chips on the intersection between the four numbers, so the chip lies partially in all four squares. This bet pays out at odds of 8 to 1.
This bet is on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and you place the chip on the corner of 0 and 1 or the corner of 00 and 3. This bet pays out at odds of 6 to 1.
Outside betting is when you place a bet on a group of numbers. The following are all the possible Outside Bets:
Red or Black
This is probably the most famous roulette bet of all and many players will exclusively play this bet. Correctly predicting whether the ball will land on Red or Black will pay out an even amount to what you bet.
Odd or Even
Similar to the Red or Black bet, you will be awarded and equal amount to your bet, by correctly predicting if the ball will land on an Odd or Even number. 1 to 18 or 19 to 36.
1 to 18/19 to 36
In this case, you will be betting on whether the ball lands in the lower of 18 number range. This is once again an even money bet.
This bet is placed on whether the ball lands in the following ranges, 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36. This bet pays out at odds of 2 to 1.
This time, you will be betting on one of the columns in the betting area, there are three columns meaning the pay-out would be 2 to 1.
